The first step of using content to grow your business is … creating the content! Shocking I know. But it’s amazing to me how many people keep their ideas in their heads despite “knowing” the value of content marketing.
Let me be clear: You have to get your ideas and concepts out of your head and posted online as text, images, audio or video.
In the good ol’ days of content marketing, creating content was enough. Create the blog post or video, post it on your website and you were done! People would do their Google searches and they’d find you. They’d spend time on your website and you’d have more website traffic, that would result in business leads and ultimately end in sales.
Those days, however, are long gone.
Now we have a second step you must take. And while it’s simple, it isn’t necessarily easy to do. The second step, which will dig into more deeply next month, is getting people to notice, engage and share your content.
People today have more information bombarding them than at any time in human history.
This presents a major challenge for marketers today. In this massive sea of information, we have to ask ourselves two important questions. The questions are 1)how do we get people to find out content and 2) more importantly how do we get people to engage with and share our content.
We, as content consumers, have become super efficient at ignoring and filtering out unwanted information. Plus, we have the technology that helps us to avoid content we don’t want (think of DVR, Caller ID, etc.).
